Ruth Mellenthin is a Licensed Clinical Social worker who has over 20 years’ experience working in the social services and mental health fields. In addition to community organizing, her background includes counseling youth, women, homeless persons, and people who live with chronic illness. She previously was a founder and director of a group home for women, and a substance abuse counselor for adolescents with diverse backgrounds.

Ruth specializes in treatment of anxiety and depression, women’s issues, substance use/abuse, and young people who are trying to find their way. Experience with persons who suffer from mental health diagnoses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety and have enabled her to understand the many forms suffering can take. She is a trauma informed therapist who is committed to furthering her professional knowledge and education.

Ruth obtained her Bachelor of Arts degrees from Northeastern Illinois University and Master of Social Work from University of Illinois Chicago. She has worked in the nonprofit, health care and mental health fields; the latter included persons who live in long-term care facilities. She utilizes a person-centered approach, based on humanistic principles, as well as various forms of cognitive, psychodynamic, and other forms of therapy, depending upon the needs of the client. Due to her social services background, Ruth also believes it is essential to examine environmental factors such as career and family dynamics.

Ruth enjoys kayaking, hiking, crafting, and keeping up with current events. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
